There’s no reason for a student checking account to charge monthly fees. There are plenty of options to get a free college student bank account with all the perks you’d expect from a full-service account.

Being a student doesn’t mean you have to go without the conveniences of a checking account because you believe fees will eat up all of your money. Banks are well aware that students often don’t have a lot of income or savings. They create checking accounts tailor-made for small balances and features students want.

And they’re playing the long game: While small student checking accounts aren’t money-makers, banks are betting that you’ll stay with them after graduation, when your income is much higher.

So, with that said, after analyzing dozen of student checking and fee-free banking options, here’s our picks of the best ones.

    Best Student Checking Accounts

    • 🥇 Best Overall For College Students: PNC Simple Checking
    • 🥈 Best For Physical Branches: Key Bank
    • 🥉 Best For Mobile: Chime
    • Best For Whole Families: Crew

These accounts combine low or no fees, national accessibility, and solid mobile options. The best choice depends on how you bank. See our methodology below and scroll down for the full list of student checking account options.

Step used to be focused on being a starter checking account for teens. But over the last few years, those teenagers have grown up – and now Step is doubling-down on being a great college student checking account.

Plus, it appears that Mr. Beast is acquiring the platform – which means that cool things may be coming for students.

Step has two plans. Their basic account is free, and this account still delivers up to 3% cashback on eligible purchases, up to 4% APY in their savings account, and of course, it’s FDIC insured.

They also have the Step Black account, which is $99 per year. This account bumps up the cashback to 8% on eligible purchases, more FDIC insurance, and offers exclusive perks.

What Students Need In A Checking Account

Students are typically new to the banking system. They might not have much income. They also might not have a job yet (for direct deposit), or have other accounts at the bank.

As such, they have unique requirements that we wanted to share, so that you can see how we based our criteria for the best student checking accounts.

In order to be one of the best student checking accounts, we put the following criteria in place:

    • No Monthly Maintenance Fees: This is a big one. All of the accounts we consider must not charge a monthly maintenance fee. Note, some of these accounts may convert after school, but this ranking is specific to college student checking accounts.
    • No Or Low Monthly Balance Required: You shouldn’t have to have huge amounts of money to waive fees or qualify for a free checking account. We only look for banks that don’t have a monthly minimum balance requirement or if they do, it’s incredibly low.
    • No Direct Deposit Requirement: Many students don’t have jobs yet, so it can be hard or impossible to get direct deposit. As such, we don’t want banks to require direct deposit for free checking.
    • Awesome Online Access: The best free checking accounts will also have awesome online access, a great app or mobile site, and be accessible anywhere.
    • No ATM Fees: College students are on the move. They should be able to access their money for free, where ever they are.

    What to Watch Out For

    • Automatic conversion after graduation: Many banks convert student accounts to standard checking – verify post-graduation fees.
    • Overdraft limits: Some banks reject transactions instead of charging, others allow overdrafts with fees.
    • Hidden ATM fees: Even “free” networks charge for out-of-network withdrawals.
    • Promos and bonuses: Check expiration dates—most change quarterly.

Why These Accounts Made This List

We compared more than 20 student checking options across national banks, credit unions, and fintechs. Each pick offers:

    • No monthly maintenance fee while enrolled
    • No or low overdraft risk
    • Wide ATM access
    • Simple online account opening
    • FDIC or NCUA coverage, either directly or through it’s partner banks

We prioritize banks that are transparent, easy to open online, and designed for college students under 25.

I’ve been writing and reporting on college student banking and investing products since 2009. I personally have shared my story and use of banking products, and I created this list with the goal of making sure that other young adults are getting great products and services at no (or very little) cost.

When creating this list, I’ve spent well over a hundred hours going through our existing product and service reviews in the banking space, along with my knowledge of banking products from my decade of experience. I’ve tested, tried, or used every product on this list, along with many of their competitors that didn’t make this list.

Furthermore, our compliance team reviews the accuracy of any rates on this list every weekday.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I open a student checking account without a parent?

Yes, if you’re 18 or older. Minors typically need a joint account with a parent or guardian.

    What happens after graduation?

Most banks convert your student checking into a standard checking account. Review whether you can keep the account fee-free by meeting direct deposit or balance requirements.

    Are mobile-only banks safe?

Yes, as long as the bank is FDIC-insured or partners with an insured institution.

Can I have two checking accounts?

Yes, some students keep one local account for cash and one online account for when traveling or at school.

    Do student accounts earn interest?

Some do – usually at modest rates (0.10–0.25%). If you want to earn more, open a high-yield savings account.

    Final Thoughts

These are the best free college student checking accounts right now.

You might also want to look at these key resources:

    • Best College Student Savings Accounts
    • Best Free Checking Accounts
    • Best Online Banks

And remember, these accounts are usually only free while you’re in college. At that point in time, some of these accounts will convert into other products, which may or may not charge fees. Plan accordingly!

    Methodology

The College Investor is dedicated to helping you make informed decisions around complex financial topics like finding the best checking account. We do this by providing unbiased reviews of the top banks and checking accounts for our readers, and then we aggregate those choices into this list.

We have picked checking accounts based on our opinions of how easy they are to use, their costs and fees, any interest rates and bonuses provided, and a variety of other factors. We believe that our list accurately reflects the best free student checking accounts in the marketplace for consumers.
