Female Content Creator At Home Recording A Video

Arizona State University has launched a Bachelor of Arts in Content Creation through its Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, available at its downtown Phoenix campus, online, and through ASU Local. Coursework covers video and podcast production, audience analytics, brand voice, monetization, copyright, plus hands-on work through a Los Angeles Content Studio and brand content projects.

Critics immediately branded it the “influencer degree,” reviving the debate over whether college is worth the investment at all.

According to reporting from the Associated Press, the curriculum overlaps heavily with ASU’s existing mass communication degree, with the main difference being specialized electives in podcasting, studio production, and on-camera presence.

ASU isn’t first, either: St. Bonaventure University announced a content creation major last winter, and Syracuse, Quinnipiac, and Colorado State offer minors. It’s part of a broader push by schools to add career-coded majors as more students choose work over college.

    Why It Matters

The creator economy is real: Emarketer forecasts U.S. social media creator revenue will top $20 billion this year. But most of that money never reaches individual creators. The bulk flows through platforms and brand spending, while sponsored content (not platform payouts) drives most creator income.

Content creation can be a legitimate income stream, but it’s a crowded field that typically pays little in the early years.

Then there’s the price. ASU’s in-state tuition runs about $12,000 per year, with total cost of attendance topping $37,000 before scholarships. Out-of-state students face tuition over $35,000 and total costs near $60,000 per year.

That’s an expensive price to pay as the average cost of college keeps climbing and the career path has no defined career trajectory or fixed salary.

    The Details

Some specifics worth knowing about the program:

    • It’s STEM-OPT eligible, meaning international students on F-1 visas may qualify for a 24-month work extension (in-person only, not ASU Online).
    • It’s not yet approved for GI Bill benefits.
    • ASU lists career paths including brand storytelling, podcasting, social media, streaming production, and digital marketing.
    • An accelerated option lets students add a master’s degree in about five years.

    How This Connects

Universities are facing a demographic cliff of a shrinking pool of students, and they’re being forced to adapt their “products” to the current marketplace.

Right now, we’re tracking multiple college closures and mergers in 2026, and even large schools like Syracuse have missed enrollment targets.

New majors like this are a recruiting play as much as a curriculum decision. The degree-value math still generally favors college graduates (College Board’s Education Pays 2026 report shows a degree still pays off on average) but that average depends heavily on how you pick your major and what you pay for it.

    What’s Next

Watch whether more universities convert content creation minors into full majors, whether ASU’s program wins GI Bill approval, and (the real test) what its first graduates actually earn.

Skills like audience analytics and brand strategy transfer to marketing and communications jobs, which may matter more than any viral moment.

But it’s also essential to remember that the best content creators that exist today never had a college degree in “content creation”. They learned and executed the skills themselves with no set curriculum. And it’s 100% possible for any aspiring creator to do that themselves as well without paying thousands for a formal education.
