Everything You Need to Know About Netflix’s Live Vote Feature

Interacting with live TV makes you feel like part of the show and Netflix is attempting to make streaming more interactive. With Netflix’s live voting feature, you now get to have a say while watching. The best part is there’s nothing extra to download.

Netflix Live Voting Makes Streaming Interactive

Until now, the only way I interacted with Netflix outside of streaming shows and movies was to give thumbs up/down to let the streamer know what I liked best. While Netflix did a limited test for interacting live with Dinner Time Live With David Chang, it wasn’t a major public release.

As of January 20, 2026, Netflix not only brought back the hit talent competition Star Search, but introduced a new way for viewers to vote. If you ever watched the original, it sometimes felt frustrating having no say. Judges made the decisions and the audience broke any ties.

Netflix decided to make the experience more interactive for all viewers. As long as you watch live, you get to vote in real-time for every act. All you need is either your phone or TV remote. No extra apps or social media necessary.

This is a major change from the way most interactive TV shows vote. Typically, you either call or text a number on the screen or use social media, such as using a hashtag on Twitter/X.

What I love is it keeps the voting more fair. You get one vote per Netflix profile. That’s it. Even if you log into Netflix on multiple devices, you still only get one vote.

    Netflix Voting Limitations

Despite a few small tests, Star Search is the first public rollout for millions of viewers. There are a few limitations, though, before you get too excited.

Obviously, you do need a Netflix account and subscription. Then, tune in to Star Search live. This is important. You must watch live. I know that might not always be convenient, but you are interacting with live TV here. Check Netflix for local times.

Live voting is only available on the Netflix mobile app (iOS and Android) and the Netflix TV apps for smart TVs and streaming devices. Live voting isn’t available in web browsers.

The voting window lasts around 60 seconds. You can’t rewind if you miss the voting window. You also can’t vote if you stream the show later on. Another reason for the short window is to prevent users from creating multiple profiles and switching between them to cast extra votes.

You get one vote only. Once it’s cast, you can’t go back and change it.

Currently, voting is limited to regions where Star Search is shown live. If it’s not broadcast in your region for Netflix, you won’t be able to participate. Using a VPN may let you bypass this restriction.

    How to Vote

I watched the first episode live. I have a Roku box, so I used my Roku TV remote to vote. When it was time, the host stated the voting window was open. Then, five stars appeared at the bottom of the screen. I used the arrows on my remote to choose how many stars and pressed the OK button to save my vote.

The same process works as long as you can stream the Netflix app on your TV. If you’re casting from your computer to your TV, you can’t vote since you’re streaming from a web browser.

If you’re on the mobile app, wait for the voting window and tap the stars to vote. That’s it.

If you’re watching after the voting window closed, you’ll see a Voting Is Now Closed message in place of the stars.

Voting is now closed message on Star Search on Netflix.

    Other Options for Live Voting

You’re not just limited to selecting a star rating. You’re also able to vote to save a contestant near the end of the show. The process works just like the star rating, except you select the contestant’s name. Once again, votes are final.

If you like interacting live during Netflix’s Star Search, stay tuned for more live broadcasts. Netflix plans to add even more ways to interact live on the mobile and TV apps. This may include choosing what happens next in a live episode, asking questions, choosing the next scene, and more.

    An Evolution From Interactive Experiences

If you remember Netflix’s interactive experiences, such as Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, you probably also know Netflix removed all of these back in early 2025.

Netflix live voting is the evolution and encourages live viewing. It’s not as convenient as interactive experiences that you could view whenever you wanted. Yet, it’s simpler for Netflix to maintain and provides more real-time feedback on how popular a show/movie/sporting event is on the platform.

With Netflix taking on a more traditional TV broadcast approach, it may start to feel more like a mix of traditional over-the-air TV and streaming versus just on-demand streaming.

You can test out live voting each week through mid-February. If all goes well, we’ll see a new season of talented performers in season two.
